Talk to Astor in iMessage

Bruno Koba4 min read

You can text Astor in iMessage the way you’d text a friend who follows the market closely. Astor is a personal investing agent and an SEC-registered investment adviser, and in iMessage you can ask about your portfolio, get alerts about what you own, and follow up in the same thread.

We put Astor in iMessage because I check my messages far more often than any finance app, and I suspect you do too. An investing app you have to remember to open is one more chore. Most of what you need from an agent fits in a text, like a note that a company you own just reported, with what that means for you. The app is still there when you want the full picture.

What can you ask Astor by text?

You can ask about anything you own. Because your accounts are connected, Astor already knows your holdings, so you don’t have to paste them in or explain your situation every time you ask something. A few examples of texts you could send:

  • “Why is my portfolio down today?”
  • “Tell me how much of my money is in AI companies across all my accounts.”
  • “Summarize the last earnings report from the biggest company I own.”
  • “Check in on this one after it reports next week.”

The last one becomes a scheduled alert, a check Astor runs on a schedule or when a condition is met.

What does Astor text you without being asked?

Astor follows every position you own and the earnings dates, filings and headlines that touch them, plus the themes you care about. When something crosses a line you care about, it texts you right away. When nothing matters, it stays quiet, which we think is as important as the alerts themselves.

Here’s a hypothetical. Say a company you own announces that its chief financial officer is leaving. Astor would text you what happened and why it matters for your position, given how much of it you hold, and what you could do about it, from doing nothing to reading the filing yourself. If you want to know more, you reply in the same thread and keep going, the way you would with a person.

Every alert links to the reasoning and sources behind it. That matters because the AI can be wrong, and you should be able to check its work before you act on anything. For more on how the watching works, read stock alerts for news on stocks you own.

How is this different from texting a general chatbot?

A general chatbot like ChatGPT is very good at general questions, like what a price-to-earnings ratio means. Astor is built for a narrower job. It connects to your accounts, learns what you own, and texts you when something happens to your portfolio.

Astor is also an SEC-registered investment adviser, so its recommendations are personalized investment advice and it owes clients a fiduciary duty. The AI is the tool the firm uses to do the research and talk to you, not the adviser itself. We compared the two in detail in Astor vs. ChatGPT.

What can’t you do in iMessage?

Astor can’t move money in your connected accounts, by text or anywhere else. Those connections run through Plaid, and Astor can see what you hold but can’t place trades or transfer anything in them, and you never send money to Astor. The one exception is Text to Trade, where you approve each trade and the order executes in your own Robinhood agentic account.

You also need an iPhone. Astor is iPhone and iMessage only, with no Android or web app, and it’s available in the US only. Some things are easier to see than to read, so the app is there for the full picture, like At a glance, the five-second check of what moved your money today.

On privacy, Astor is SOC 2 Type II compliant, encrypts your data in transit and at rest, and never sells your data. If you’re weighing whether to connect at all, we wrote about whether it’s safe to connect your brokerage account.

Frequently asked questions

Can I text an AI about my stocks?

Yes. With Astor you can text a personal investing agent in iMessage about the stocks you actually own. It knows your holdings through your connected accounts and answers using live prices, news and filings. You can follow up in the same thread like any other conversation.

Is Astor an AI financial advisor in iMessage?

The adviser is the firm. Astor (Gaus, Inc.) is an SEC-registered investment adviser that owes its clients a fiduciary duty, and the AI is the tool it uses to research and talk to you. SEC registration doesn’t mean the SEC endorses Astor.

Will Astor text me all day?

No. Astor texts you when something crosses a line you care about for a stock or theme you follow, and it stays quiet when nothing matters. You can also ask for checks on your own schedule with scheduled alerts.

Is my data safe with Astor?

Astor is SOC 2 Type II compliant, encrypts data in transit and at rest, and never sells your data. Astor can see what you hold through your account connections, but it can’t move money.
