Which apps alert you when news affects the stocks you own?

Astor team9 min read

Several apps will alert you to news about stocks you hold. Schwab and Fidelity do it inside their own apps, and Seeking Alpha, Yahoo Finance and Perplexity can pull your holdings in from a linked broker. Astor is a personal investing agent that connects to all your accounts, watches the headlines, filings and earnings dates that touch each position, and texts you what happened and why it matters to you, staying quiet when nothing does.

The real difference is what each one knows about your portfolio, because an alert is only as useful as that picture.

What should a portfolio news alert actually do?

In our view, three things separate a useful alert from noise.

  1. It knows what you actually own, across every account. A watchlist you typed in goes stale, and an alert from one broker is built around that broker’s accounts, not your 401(k) or your other brokerage.
  2. It says why the news matters to you. A 4% drop in a stock means something different if it’s 2% of your portfolio or 20%, and if three other things you own move with it.
  3. It’s quiet the rest of the time. If an app pings you about every headline on every holding, you’ll start ignoring it, including the one alert that mattered.

Can your brokerage app alert you about news?

Yes, with limits. Brokerage alerts are built around your positions at that firm.

Schwab documents the widest range of the three. Its guide to alerts lists price and volume alerts, dividend alerts, earnings-date and earnings-release alerts, and news alerts based on news stories or press releases for securities on a watchlist or in a portfolio. Alerts go by email or to a wireless device. Schwab also announced Charley, an AI assistant that answers questions about balances and positions, rolling out in phases to eligible US retail clients starting in October 2026.

Fidelity says its alerts can notify you about specific stock movements, economic announcements and other news, sent as push notifications in the Fidelity app, and price-trigger alerts can also come by text or email.

Robinhood‘s built-in notifications are mostly about price. You can get alerts when a stock you hold moves 5% or 10%, set custom price or indicator alerts, and get email for significant moves. For news, Robinhood Gold members get Portfolio Digests, AI-generated summaries of the market backdrop, the holdings driving your returns, top movers and upcoming events like earnings. Digests are part of a rolling release and use information from your Robinhood account, excluding IRAs.

What about Yahoo Finance, Google Finance and Seeking Alpha?

These sit outside your broker, so they can cover more of your portfolio if you tell them what you own.

Yahoo Finance lets you link a brokerage account or build a portfolio by hand, and its iOS app can push notifications for news, events and significant price changes for the symbols you follow. The free plan includes watchlists and alerts. Paid plans start at $95.40 a year (Bronze, unlimited custom price alerts), and Silver ($239.40 a year) adds alerts for new analyst ratings.

Google Finance shows news for your watchlist, and its AI “key moments” explain why a stock moved. Google’s pages describe building a portfolio by telling it what you own or uploading screenshots or files, and don’t mention linking a broker. You can also set up scheduled AI briefings that notify you through the Google app, though portfolios and these tasks are web-only for now.

Seeking Alpha goes furthest of these three on alerts tied to what you hold. Premium and PRO subscribers can link US brokerage accounts (through Plaid and SnapTrade), holdings update daily, and you’re automatically subscribed to real-time alerts for them by email or push, plus a daily digest per portfolio. You can choose which portfolios and content types send alerts. Premium costs $299 a year.

Can TradingView or Perplexity watch the news for you?

TradingView lets you save a news flow filtered by tickers or a watchlist and turn on an alert, so you’re notified when a new story matches. Free accounts get one active news alert and paid plans can track up to 10 flows. It also publishes AI summaries of SEC filings minutes after they’re released. Its portfolios are built from a CSV, manual entry or a watchlist. Paid plans start at $12.95 a month billed yearly.

Perplexity can connect brokerage accounts through Plaid with read-only access (on desktop, in the US and Canada). Scheduled Tasks in Perplexity Computer, which comes with Pro and Max, can monitor prices and news in the background as often as once an hour and notify you by push or email. It’s flexible, but you write the instructions for what to watch. Our Astor vs. Perplexity Finance comparison goes deeper.

When is another app the better choice?

If nearly all your money is at Schwab or Fidelity, their own alerts already know your positions. If you trade actively and want charting and technical alerts, TradingView is built for that. If you want deep research and analyst articles on what you own, Seeking Alpha Premium is a strong pick. If you’d rather write your own monitoring instructions, Perplexity is flexible. And Astor is iPhone and iMessage only, and US only, so it won’t work on Android or the web.

Why Astor

Astor is a personal investing agent, and watching is most of what it does. It connects to the brokerage, retirement and crypto accounts you already have, so it knows what you actually own without you typing anything in. It follows every position plus the earnings dates, filings and headlines that touch them, and themes you care about. When something crosses a line you care about, it texts you right away with what happened, why it matters to your portfolio, and what you could do. When nothing matters, it stays quiet.

Every alert links to the reasoning and sources behind it, because the AI can be wrong and you make the call. You can reply in the same iMessage thread with a follow-up, and scheduled alerts let you ask for a check on a schedule, like before a company you own reports. The free plan includes one custom alert. Astor (Gaus, Inc.) is an SEC-registered investment adviser, and it can’t move your money.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an app that sends news alerts for all my brokerage accounts at once?

Yes, if it can link to each account. Seeking Alpha Premium can sync holdings from several US brokers and alert you on them, and Astor connects to most major US brokerage, retirement and crypto accounts. Alerts inside a brokerage app are built around that brokerage’s accounts.

Do Robinhood’s alerts include news?

Robinhood’s standard alerts are mostly price-based, such as a 5% or 10% move in a stock you hold. Robinhood Gold members get Portfolio Digests, which summarize the news and events affecting their Robinhood holdings.

How do I avoid getting too many stock alerts?

Turn off alerts for stocks you don’t care much about, use digests instead of real-time alerts where you can, and prefer tools that filter by relevance rather than sending every headline. Seeking Alpha, for example, lets you choose which portfolios and content types send alerts.

The safer setups use read-only connections through providers like Plaid, so the app can see holdings but can’t move money. Astor connects through Plaid and can’t move money in your accounts. Our guide on connecting your brokerage account safely covers what to check.
